Upon arriving in Belize, our first order of business was a cocktail for me and a snack for Michael. We checked in at the beautiful "Victoria House" on San Pedro Island and immediately asked for the bar. Admiral Nelsons Beach Bar was just around the bend. I made an immediate decision to only drink Belizian beers ( Belikin) and Belizian rum (One Barrel). Michael's decision was to only drink water and "Orange Fanta" bottled on the mainland. Everyone knows that going to an island the first thing you order is Ceviche! Fresh fish, citrus and pure goodness. We also ordered what would become our favorite pool side snack... "Spicy Shrimp and seafood fritters." A perfect welcome to the first day in Belize.
We knew that we didn't want to stay on the resort and that we indeed needed to get some local fare! We rented a golf cart and headed into town for breakfast the next day. We were quickly directed by the locals to a place called "Estel's". Don't ask us or them for the address. All you have to know is that it's the only blue hole in the wall along the beach next to the church. While we were a little thrown back with the "look of the place" we were pleasantly surprised with the delicious $4.00 lobster omelets and the delicious Belizian coffee. This is also where were introduced to the best hot sauce I have ever tasted (Marie Sharps). It's spicy and vinegary and it's a perfect addition to eggs and just about anything else!
During our trip we met an awesome couple who we dined with several times! We both heard about "Wild mango's" and had to see for ourselves. We double dated for the first time with our new friends Renee & Adam. Wild Mango was a delicious restaurant with fresh fish and daily specials. Each night the specials changed and they were always delicious. Not shy with our new friends we tasted each others dishes filling up on Tuna ceviche, Wahoo, Cobia, Tequila flamed shrimp, Warm Apple Empanadas & Banana Chimichangas. This place is definitely a must visit spot on the island. We visited Wild Mango's several times during our stay in Belize, YOU SHOULD TOO!
While traveling always always ask the locals where to eat and what they eat! You'll be surprised how delicious the food is! You better Belize-It!
